About CUYLM
CUYLM empowers up-and-coming leaders to share ideas, connect with peers and senior leaders, and collaborate on activities that promote and enhance our credit union system. We want to inspire you, give you new tools to help you excel at what you do, and help you meet great people!
Within CUYLM, there is representation from nearly all of Manitoba’s credit unions, and our young leaders work in a large variety of different roles in the system. But what we all have in common is an eagerness to learn and try new things and a passion for personal and professional growth.
As a young leader in the credit union system, you are invited to participate in inspiring events like think tanks, our biannual conference, and other skill-building workshops designed to help you discover your potential and gain a broader view of the credit union system.
Connecting with people from other credit unions can give you new insights into how you approach your work, offer solutions to the challenges you face at your branch, and demonstrate the strength we have when we work together.
If this sounds good to you, subscribe to our newsletter! We will keep you in the loop about the exciting things we are planning next!
Our History
In 2008, Steph Wiens (then employee at Assiniboine Credit Union) had the privilege of serving 3 years on the credit union National Young Leaders’ Committee (NYLC). The NYLC had its sights set on building stronger ties to provincial leaders and helping to engage more young leaders throughout the system. The successes shared by others who had young leader committees in their provinces (or were in the process of founding them) inspired Steph to think about what we could do here in Manitoba.
Conversations with Credit Union Central of Manitoba began in the fall of 2010, and young leaders quickly received the support and funding to launch their own provincial initiative. A group of people came together from across the Manitoba credit union system to start the heavy lifting, and through a collaborative effort, CUYLM was formally launched.
Today the success of the CUYLM can be attributed to the many committed credit union young leaders who have taken this committee from a concept in its early stages to an engaged committee making significant change in our provincial system!
Our Value
Brent Budz, CEO of Stride Credit Union,
Founding member of CUYLM
As a founding member and CUYLM alumni, I can personally attest to the value of belonging to and participating in the young leaders movement in Manitoba. It is each organization’s responsibility to help cultivate future generations of innovation that push all of us to think about the future, the opportunities that exist, the challenges we must face and the collaborations that we must embrace to mirror the success our credit union system has historically experienced well into the future.
The exposure to peers and the associated skill building that accompanies structured networking, access to Manitoba and National system information and trends, along with the ability to discuss current practices and strategies is simply not something young leaders can get access to within their own credit union.
I would strongly encourage credit unions across our province, and our nation for that matter, to embrace this important responsibility, and identify and nurture individuals in our system that will help shape its future by supporting CUYLM and all it has to offer.
